Abstract

This study aims to find out how the implementation of maintenance in the household is carried out by career women in Genteng District, as well as the view of Islamic law on the role and position of husband and wife in the context of providing maintenance when the wife also earns. This type of research is qualitative field research with a case study approach. The data collection technique was carried out through in-depth interviews with five career women who were married and lived in Genteng District, Banyuwangi Regency. The data are then analyzed descriptively through an inductive approach to draw conclusions that are in accordance with empirical conditions and Islamic legal values. The results of the study show that the majority of career women in Genteng District still receive maintenance from their husbands regularly, even though they also earn their own income. Husbands continue to carry out their duties as commanded in Islamic law. Meanwhile, the financial contribution of the wife is more voluntary and based on a sense of shared responsibility in domestic life. From the perspective of Islamic law, the obligation to maintain remains in the hands of the husband, regardless of the wife's economic status. Islam allows women to work as long as they do not neglect their domestic obligations and still maintain the principles of shari'i. This study confirms that despite the dynamics of roles in the modern family, the basic principle of the husband's maintenance obligation still applies. Career women who play an active role in the public sphere do not abort their right to receive a living, and their contributions are considered a form of goodness, not an obligation.
