Scrap Collectors in Improving the Economy of Kradeanan Village Community

Abstrak

The role of scrap collectors is crucial in waste management and community economic empowerment. The collector business serves as a link between valueless waste and the recycling industry, enabling waste to be reprocessed into products with utility and economic value. In addition to contributing to environmental preservation, collectors also play a role in improving community welfare through the empowerment of scavengers, who generally come from economically disadvantaged groups. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data sources consist of primary and secondary data, while data collection techniques involve interviews and observations. Data analysis follows stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research findings indicate that the collector's business segment can generate revenue of approximately Rp2,000,000 with a larger waste collection capacity. Meanwhile, the regular segment, which handles the collection of around 500 kg of waste from the community, such as students and housewives, earns a revenue ranging from Rp500,000–Rp1,000,000. Research findings also reveal that the scrap collector business has successfully improved the welfare of scavengers and workers. The loyalty of the scavengers is evident in their willingness to invite fellow professionals to join. From its establishment in 2012 to 2026, the number of scavengers joining has continuously increased, serving as proof of the success of the empowerment program.
