Strategies for Collection and Distribution Processes of the Zakat Collection Unit

Zakat is one of the fundamental principles in Islam, both from the perspective of the relationship between individuals and Allah (hablumminallah) and within the context of social relationships (hablumminannas). This study aims to evaluate the methods of collecting and managing zakat funds at the Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ), as well as to assess the effectiveness of the zakat distribution process. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive field research approach, in which existing problems are explained based on data collected through field observations. The purposive sampling method was used in data collection, emphasizing specific considerations, while the data sources were divided into two categories: primary data and secondary data. Data analysis was conducted systematically through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study reveal that the strategies used in the collection and management of zakat at the UPZ are as follows: First, the preparation of human resources and operational systems by appointing officers who possess integrity, uphold Islamic teachings, are honest, responsible, and trustworthy. Second, the development of communication with donors through personal approaches via telephone calls and text messages as a form of routine communication. In addition, social media has also been utilized as a modern communication medium at the UPZ. The distribution of zakat at the UPZ is carried out through systematic planning and implementation in five sectors: 1) Economic sector, 2) Humanitarian sector, 3) Health sector, 4) Education sector, and 5) Da’wah and social sector.
